Sturgeon Point Light was built in 1869. The 70 ft tower and attached white keeper's house remain in excellent condition. In 1887 the original lens was replaced with a Third-and-a-Half Order lens--a size used exclusively on the Great Lakes.

Jutting out gently into Lake Huron, Sturgeon Point requires a lighthouse to warn mariners of the shoreline and a strip of gravel that runs out into the water before ending in a sand bar. This still operating lighthouse and its dwelling were refurbished and repainted by the Alcona County Historical Society and now serves as a museum.

The Coast Guard occasionally opens the tower at Sturgeon Pt. for climbing.
