Located about twenty miles south of Cape Hatteras Light, it stands near the southern end of Ocracoke Island and is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Access to this historic light is only made by boat or ferry.

The tower stands approximately 65 feet tall or 75 feet above sea level. Construction was completed in 1823, making it the second oldest lighthouse by continous service in the United States. It is the oldest "still in use" lighthouse in North Carolina.

Ocracoke Island is the legendary hideout and home of Blackbeard the Pirate. By the 1820's, the Island and Ocracoke Inlet, became a major shipping port. Thus, the need for a beacon was deemed necessary. The U.S. Coast Gaurd owns and maintains the light at present, since it is still a working aid to navigation. Its 8000-candlepower light is visible at night for 14 miles.
